How A Runner Uses His Smartphone To Combat Eye Disease

A smartphone is the must have device with 1 billion smartphones been predicted to be sold in 2013. An amazing statistic but even more amazing is how for some people, smartphones are making a real difference to lives as Carphone Warehouse latest 'Smarter World' initiative discovered.

They teamed up with Simon Wheatcroft, a blind ultra-marathon runner who uses the greatest and latest smartphone technology and applications to overcome his Retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease that causes severe vision impairment and often blindness.

Simon has inspired many other blind people and sponsors, but he says that the real thrill and motivation for training comes from simply being able to complete on a level playing field. In an interview last year he said:

"This gives me a great opportunity to compete with everybody. I can't hide from the fact I'm blind, but at the same time I would rather compete with everybody else and not be put into a special section. Being visually impaired doesn't mean you can't run"

You can watch the video below to learn about Simon's amazing story through Carphone Warehouse's latest Smartphone campaign. Simon shows us how his disability won't stop him from doing what he loves.
